Go Slow at the Start of Spring
Hello and welcome to the first week of spring!!!!!!! Well, for those of you in the northern hemisphere. This winter has been a bit of a slog for me: it was long, dark and ended with a bout of Covid. Hence the many !!!!!!! to welcome it in. I am extreeemely ready for new life to come in and to experience a little shake up of energy.
But earlier this week I started to feel a little unwell. OMG I said to myself, ‘Self: nope, no - absolutely not.’ I used what I have in my arsenal of herbs, tonics and other bits and bobs to prevent me from getting a full blown (and very common) spring cold. And it worked.
But it was a good reminder that I’ll now share with you: it’s easy, in this change of energy, in the extra hours of light and warmer weather to get ahead of ourselves. To forget that we are like nature (much as we may think ourselves separate from it). It is prudent to take it slowly when emerging from a winter slumber. You may feel the urge to get busy, book yourself up and forget to rest. Look at the trees: they’re not out here dancing until midnight on a rooftop somewhere (though that sounds really fun rn)! They have yet to even sprout the first leaves. Be like the tree; I urge you to take it slowly, wear a scarf for the next few weeks and thank me later.
As I've learned more and more about ritual over the past couple of years with some of my teachers, I’ve started to mark the changing of each season in a tangible way. On Monday I practiced a ritual and marvelled at the fact that I could sit outside, with the sun on my face, without a coat on - sipping in the Vit D, feeling the wind on my face without feeling like I was about to get frostbite, experiencing a full body exhale. It’s only natural that we want to run towards spring, it’s not easy to be inside so much in the winter, especially the winters we’ve had through the pandemic. The more I learn, the more I realise I don’t know and that everyone could do with approaching their days and their lives with more balance. Simple but true.
I am so excited about the next events I have coming up. This Sunday I'm teaching on Zoom and on Tuesday I'm teaching a Body Temple Dance workshop at Clove Community Arts in Chichester, NY. If you're in the area, or have friends who are - please spread the word!
